Key-players from nine industrial sectors convened in Brussels on the 23rd - 24th June 2009 to analyse the dynamics and future development of sectoral systems of innovation.

Sectoral Innovation Watch (SIW) aims to anticipate the way in which sectoral innovation systems evolve and apply mechanisms to support the future development of innovation policies and strategies. Upon opening the Foresights workshop, Reinhard Buscher, Head of Unit, Support for Innovation at DG Enterprise and Industry noted, "There is a need to use innovation as an enabler to increase jobs and to support Innovation at an activity level. This remains a challenge. Half of Innovation is driven by research and technology. The other half is the way in which we support these at the policy level, in order to turn ideas into value."

SIW identifies key drivers, emerging markets and specific requirements - such as organizational change at firm level; skills requirements; structural changes; the possible merging of sectors; and institutional changes. This is done by sketching out possible future scenarios, taking into account the associated challenges, underlying driving forces, and alternatives for dealing with them.
"For this," adds Reinhard Buscher, "we need entrepreneurs, and to drive innovation. We need to identify who the agents of change are. Where are they? What is the role of incumbents and startups? The link between technologies and markets are companies. But we are not interested in technology per se but value creation; we are interested in jobs and people."

The nine industries involved in the first SIW workshop are indicated below. The start for constructive discussions was set by the 'state-of-the-art knowledge', captured in 9 foresight interim working documents. Please click to view/download the 9 working documents of the concerned sectors;
